Duchamps readymades are stuff of legends. ‘Fountain’ is his most famous, a urinal tipped on its side and signed off still causes debate today between art or anti-art. His ideas are playful and often absurdist , often though to be a destructive influence on the art world, but in fact he is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, inspiring those such as Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst.
I am not a fan of Duchamp’s sculptured readymades, however I do appreciate and enjoy their simplicity and think there isa more philosophical view that can be taken on them.
‘Can one make works that are not works of art?’-Marcel Duchamp
He questions is own work and I love that. He has no idea of his own creations, and always exploits the initial idea by suggesting it’s not even art work (Or is everything artwork?). His own extreme minimalism confuses himself , whilst the freedom of exploration he provides encouragement of to others inspires a branched out work ethic. He inspired whole art movements, and continues to do so today.
