Dana Munro

Dana Munro’s presentation started with a snippet of her artist statement alongside a mixed media piece of her work being shown. The video itself was intriguing and got me interested in the rest of her work, as it was and overlapped and incandescent video of birds in which she had double exposed the film to distort the size and placements of the birds. She explained that the camera movements were preempted in order to follow and document,  so she was able to “keep up, operate and try to manage” the freedom of the natural birds’ ventures with super imposition. Throughout her presentation she used modern or popular films to support her own work and backup her techniques; for this video she used Blade Runner as an example for the editing transitions.

I enjoyed her description and ideas behind some of her work, including ‘The Playboys’ 2018 and ‘I Wish My Wife Was As Dirty As This’ 2018 however within her prepared speech I’ll admit I got a bit lost and confused within the layers of examples and videos and inspirations. I liked and understood her basis idea of ‘karaoke’; using something that’s already been written or created as an underlying theme throughout her pieces. For example she uses Pat Hurn’s gallery NYC’s use of old 1950/60s Playboy magazine cover illustrations in her own ‘No Biography’ exhibition. I wish I could explain further into the exhibition itself but it was brief and not the clearest presentation of a visiting artist so far.

I am hoping that next week’s artist will be more coherent and easier to follow, as I wasn’t really able to connect with the work remotely.
