Beginning an Internship with FabLab

In the coming week I am to start an internship at FabLab, based in my university building, which I am hoping will give me a hands on learning experience and expand my skillset, possibly guiding my education into an area of work I would enjoy. I previously used my free time to volunteer within a gallery space, invigilating and being on the front desk, but I have since found that I would prefer a more creative opportunity.

FabLab (Digital Fabrication Laboratory) is a physical space that focus on innovation and invention using technology and digital fabrication. This space is open for staff and students at Liverpool John Moore’s University, and I am lucky enough to have the chance to help out and learn the practice whilst there.

I will be attending the internship once or twice a week to help with upcoming projects in the city centre, including Light Night on 15th May and a regeneration project in the World Museum, Liverpool. I am excited to discover what the plans are for Light Night as it is an event I attend and enjoy every year, so to be a part of it is very exciting and something I can give a great insight into. This coming Wednesday (11th March) morning, I will be attending a ‘How To…’ session as an introduction to the internship and the general FabLab institution.

I will use this platform to record my learning experience in the months to follow and will critically evaluate my time with FabLab in order to reflect fully on the experience for my own future reference.
