Volunteering at the Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool

Thursday 8th August

Today I began my internship volunteering at Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool, where I hope to expand my knowledge on the inner workings of a gallery and make some connections with those in the industry. I will be working one day a week on the front desk for the foreseeable future, and helping out at any events/exhibition openings that I can.

All the employees and other volunteers were really friendly and everyone was able to conduct their own research on an area of interest during the day; this was very helpful for me to be able to learn more about the gallery, current exhibition and stock in the independent shop (which I am also responsible for).  I am lucky that on the front desk, my skills from previous jobs in hospitality come into play, and I am confident speaking to the public and helping them how I can.

Despite being a long day, (9:45am-5:15pm) there are several roles that the front of house take on and a fair few jobs to be done. I was able to draft out social media updates for the Facebook and Twitter pages, presenting the new stock of kid’s activity books.

Now starting a weekly commitment to the gallery, I will be sure to focus more on the jobs involved in the company and the job roles of each employee in order to learn the most I can from this experience.
