Volunteering at the Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool

Thursday 15th August

Day two volunteering was quite different to the previous week, as I was walked through the health and safety measures within the building (including fire extinguishers, alarms, meeting points, first aid kits and failsafes). I was reassured that I wouldn’t need to use specific things, as in an emergency I would tell a senior member of staff, but would be expected to know the whereabouts for visitor’s safety.

I am responsible with both social media and responding to emails; one in particular was an enquiry about a group booking for which I had to create an event in the google calendar to insert ‘guest in’ and let the relevant staff aware. I also was given a job of stock check/count which made me much more confident in using the Mac checkout software, and allowed me to search more into the stock in the shop.

An exciting opportunity today was the chance to read through submissions for the upcoming Zine and Photobook Fair and give my opinion on those which could be included. Some of my favourites were works called ‘Avant Garbage’, ‘Line of Gurgaon’ and ‘Things Given’. Each submission included several pages of the phonebook/zine with a short explanation.

I struggled to keep myself occupied for the whole shift as it was a very quiet day, but I am hoping in the coming weeks to be talked through the archive of the gallery (only small due to the photographic nature of gallery), as conservation is an area I have been interested in learning more about.
